Hibernation 101

WINTER IS (ALMOST?) OVER

The first rule of hibernation is…you eventually have to come out of hibernation. OOF. Everyone I know is having a hard time coming out from under their blanket, leaving the house, and socializing again. SAME, BRO.

The work we do is pretty seasonal, since a lot of the events we help produce are at least partially outdoors. That means we end up running ourselves into the ground during the summer and fall, but get to slow down and rest throughout the winter.

Now it’s time to get moving again. We’ve had some pretty exciting things happen lately, and hope this inspires you to go outside and get shit done.

ART IN THE PARK

Every February, Dubuque Museum of Art hosts the Winter Arts Snow Sculpting Festival in Washington Park. Local professional and amateur artists spend nearly a week transforming 288 cubic feet of snow into incredible sculpted works of art.

Last year, we had RIDICULOUS 50+ degree days during what was supposed to be festival week, and we had to cancel. It was a huge bummer. This year, we were thrilled that the weather cooperated and brought thousands of people through the park to see the sculptures.

The Wicked River team got started days before the artists arrived, coordinating the volunteer efforts and equipment that it takes to build the 6x6x8 ft. blocks of solid snow so the artists can get to work. In the end, we had 5 teams compete for the “Best In Snow” and “People’s Choice” prizes.

Thanks to the City of Dubuque for putting together this excellent recap video that you can checkout online!

OUR TEAM IS GROWING!

At the end of last year, we once again helped Gronen put on the Merry Millwork Market — a holiday-themed handmade market in the heart of downtown. It was the first “official” event for our new team member, Beth. She totally crushed it and we are so excited to have her on board.

We have some new service offerings in the works and will be adding more positions, so stay tuned for a future announcement with more opportunities soon!

WHAT ELSE AND WHAT’S NEXT

I’ve been taking time to go on a few short road trips, snuggle with cats, see live music, and hang with friends, family, and the cutest lil nephew you’ve ever seen. We’re also in the process of moving offices. Stay tuned for a sneak peek of the new space once we’re all settled in.

Planning for summer and fall events is starting to ramp up and you’ll see us back out in the community sometime soon. It’s time to get back to work!
